Livestock Identification Forum

PIERRE, S.D. – SDSU Cooperative Extension Service and Tatanka Resource Conservation Development, in cooperation with the South Dakota Animal Industry Board will host a regional Livestock Identification Forum for area livestock producers on Monday, November 8th at the Community Center in Timber Lake. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. MDT, followed by introductions. 

Dr. Sam Holland, South Dakota State Veterinarian will kick off the forum at 10:35 a.m. talking about “What is the buzz about livestock identification”.  At 11:30 a.m. Dr. Dusty Oedekoven, South Dakota Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Coordinator, will talk on requirements needed to become BQA certified followed by Eric Iversen ,South Dakota Livestock Development and Marketing Specialist, who will bring the group up to date on the South Dakota Certified Beef Program . After lunch Dr. Lynn Tesar, USDA Veterinarian from Pierre will update the producers on the United States Animal Identification Plan (USAIP) at the federal level and then Dr. John Allen with the South Dakota Dept. of Ag; will talk about the status of South Dakota’s livestock identification plan.

The panel discussion will begin at 2:15 p.m.; Dr. Sam Holland will moderate the panel which will be made up of representatives from the livestock industry. In addition, other panel members will be present including a local veterinarian, sale barn owner and spokespersons from the animal electronic identification technology industry.

There will also be numerous animal ID systems displayed and their representatives on hand to answer question during the forum.

A $7.00 registration fee will be charged to cover the expenses. Those planning to attend the Livestock Identification Forum  must RSVP by November 3rd by contacting their local Extension Office or Tatanka RC&D Office at 605-244- 5222 Ext. 4.
